HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOGA RETREAT
We have prepared some tips for how to prepare for a yoga retreat, whether it’s your first retreat or your hundredth!
Remember to connect to your intuition by acknowledging the feelings deep in your gut. Moreover, that is probably what your Self wishes for.
There are so many benefits attending a yoga retreat will bring you during your stay and here we just name a few:
- You will travel.
- You will meet new, like-minded people with whom lasting friendships will be made.
- Retreats are always located in special places so you simply have to choose the right one for you, once there you will enjoy your venue, and have the opportunity to explore places nearby.
- You will focus on yourself for a change, learning the pleasure of the present moment with yourself.
- You will have time to challenge, release and surrender.
- You will feel the frequency of a community of different members with the same intentions.
- You will experience many pleasurable details like healthy-minded meals and fresh local food.
More importantly, a yoga retreat is a unique experience that will support you physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, both on retreat and on your return home.
How Do You Prep For A Retreat?
Everyone who attends a retreat is different, so you cannot be prepared for everything. I suggest, as with all traveling you explore surrendering to the possibility of using your creativity and imagination when on retreat.
Firstly, enjoy mentally in your visualisation meditation, or your daydreaming. This is a not so hidden pleasure of a retreat. Believe that when you arrive on your retreat, you will enjoy it as your mind is already prepared for the experience.
Imagine your best holiday ever and while a number of unpleasant situations may occur, you accept them all with lightness and kindness.
Secondly, when you will be on retreat, you will do what you want to do. And if you feel at all uncomfortable you can always excuse yourself from any practice. There is no written rule that you need to follow all tasks or join in on every moment of the program.
You can always retreat from the retreat.
You have your right to the space you need. That’s what retreats are.
And if you are new to Yoga, then worry less.
At last, relax with faith in your best Self that will start to blossom when you intentionally dedicate yourself to it. Where your intention goes, energy flows. That will explain all that is happening.
Your week of retreat and dedication you will grow and surrender, to your discipline and pleasure, from action to stillness. Through it all you will come out with a renewed Self. Believe me, you will step out with new sensations and balancing feelings that you simply start to enjoy.
Preparation Tips
The good news for yogis old and new is that there’s absolutely nothing to worry about. You’ll be just fine, however often you’ve practised Yoga.
Even being completely new to it, you’ll find that you can manage perfectly well. You just follow your own pace and explore your practice in the way that best suits you.
However, if you’re still worrying about how, here are some tips to get you ready for your yoga retreat experience so that you can have maximum enjoyment.
1. KEEP UP WITH YOUR PRACTICE
It’s a pretty obvious tip, but if you keep practising before you head off to your retreat, you’ll feel more mentally and physically prepared when you arrive. If you are about to start, check for some online resources and practices.
On the other side, you have the total right to simply choose not to need to know anything in advance. You might be someone who likes surprises.
If you want to meet our teachers in preparation for your retreat, check this free link to a Kundalini session led by Marieke. Marieke and Tim will be leading a retreat on Vis, Your Eternal Self, Kundalini Yoga Retreat, from
18-25 September 2021.
You will see that you can follow the entire session and however you choose, challenge your body energy.
Avoid any tempting poses that are new to you, as you don’t want to get hurt before the retreat. If these postures do come up while you’re on retreat, you can always explore them then.
2.Pack Light
Travel light as the saying goes and this especially refers to you if attending a retreat. There is no need for a ton of luggage when on retreat. It is amazing to see just how little luggage you need to have a a nice time on holiday.
Take two pairs of leggings, it will be enough. It is unlikely that you will need a hairdryer. You are being welcomed to a venue and environment, where everyone accepts each other as they are.
You don’t want to feel cold during the night and one lighter outdoor jacket is recommended. Keep in mind and prepare for a walk through the wild rocky roads. I’m often amazed how little I actually need when on the island.
3.Think About Your Intentions
What are your intentions about going on the retreat? Maybe you want to find peace in your heart or learn to meditate? Maybe only rejuvenation and deep relaxation of your whole being are on your list? Maybe you feel lost on the way and need to meet yourself on that road you are on? Or you just want to do or go somewhere unknown with your friends and feel good about doing something for your wellbeing.
Whatever you think is your wish, acknowledge it, accept it and celebrate your intentions by mindfully exploring the depth of your wishes, whether they mean skipping one practice or just wander through the fields or whether you need intensive training for body, mind and soul. Either way always remember it’s your choice.
4.Eat Mindfully
If you are not already floating through the immense benefits of a healthy style food diet, you will be amazed at the richness and taste. We would like to bring you simple, whole food that respects local resources, embracing healthy modern ideas and superfoods.
This means that it may be a bit of a shock for your body if you’re used to eating fast food and sugary snacks, drinking gallons of coffee or wine. Begin preparing your body with a healthy intake habit focusing more on veggies, fruits, good fats and self-love. Access my free recipe book.
5. Discover Destinations
When you are heading to a retreat, you might neglect one of the most exciting things: knowing your destination.
We will be hosting you on Vis, an idyllic island in the Adriatic An island famous for its movie set. And yet, there is so much more in everyday life here on the island. It’s the people’s every day lives, history, and culture that makes our Eternal Self Retreat even more of a one of a kind retreat experience.
And, no matter where in the world your chosen retreat may be, manage your expectations about what you’re wanting and what you’re going to get out of it all.
You can freely ask me about anything you need to know in advance.
And remember there is nothing to be nervous about. It’s a smart way of combining a retreat and vacationing experience.
It might be enough that you already feel and know that you will have a great time and just head to.
