What's On The Retreat Menu

What Type of Food Should You Expect on Retreat?

Do you wonder what’s on your retreat menu? I am so excited to be hosting for you two amazing and different yoga retreats in September 2021 on the beautiful island of Vis. I will be your host for both retreats, here to take care of all your needs while you dedicate your energy and focus on you,  your experience and simply enjoying the retreat.

This means for these two retreats I want to be totally focused on creating the most amazing experience for you and not just in the kitchen taking care of your dietary needs.

So, I have joined forces with Sanja Hrvoić,  Chef de cuisine for retreat communities experienced in preparing retreat menu.

Anyhow, we have brainstormed your menu together, and we look forward to hosting her as a chef for our two retreats, Eternal Self Kundalini Retreat and Balancing Your Energy Sea & SUP Retreat here on the spectacular island of Vis.

Who is Chef de Cuisine For Your Retreat?

Firstly, let me introduce you here to Sanja Hrvoić. Four years ago, after travelling to India, Sanja’s spiritual journey began and ultimately led to her greatest passion, cooking.

In 2019 she started writing her blog: Moksha, where she freely shares her culinary ideas and recipes. Last year she started cooking at retreat events and discovered an entirely new world of food delight and exploration.

In her kitchen, the food manifests simply, naturally and with love. Extraordinary food combinations and ideas constantly flow through her mind, especially before bedtime when next-day-lunch ideas appear out of thin air.

Mainly vegan, vegetarian and Mediterranean cuisine are her specialities which all come from her own personal experience, cooking for herself and her loved ones.

Our Passion for Local Ingredients

As much as possible we will be using locally sourced ingredients, sometimes combined with bestsellers of healthy fresh soul food.

And one item we will source on Vis is Vis lemons, a special variety with thick skin and lots of white that is great for creating jelly type textures.

And if you’re interested? We will be organising a jam session afternoon to cook lemon jam. Excellent in desserts, savoury salads and bites?

For example, we look to combine one day with foraging as we collect herbs for teas or salads during our walks through the fields of Vis.

Wild herbs have so many benefits and purposes. We will probably step onto Salvia Officinalis, and walk through rosemary, oregano, figs, wild fennel, lavender, cappers, grapes, lemon and carob or olive trees, and vineyards with herbs that people collect and create recipes for.

Retreat Menu Ideas and Activities

The morning before practice, we will serve local tea to refresh our organs with fruit pieces, after their night cleaning work, then head to the mat for a morning session.

After our practice, we will have our main daily meal, which usually combines a variety of choices, starting with your superfood cup of chia pudding or other creamy delight.

Bruschetta with fresh garden tomatoes, peppers, cucumber, cottage cheese and morsels of dried or fresh figs.

Green curry with veggies: courgette, eggplant, cabbage, cauliflower, carrot and swiss chard, greens served with couscous and spiced with local lemons and parsley. Curry is not a local delight and it is a great way to use local ingredients with an oriental twist.

We love Panzanella Salad which is usually roasted or grilled, bread chunks mixed with local tomatoes, peppers, cucumber, garden onions, and a nice vinaigrette. It’s a classic summer salad using the veggies growing around us on the Island of Vis. It can easily be transformed from vegan salad to richer version with local fresh cheese.

Pastry and Sweet

Then a speciality, vegan cake made with Vis lemons and almonds. This classic lemon cake has been revisited to create a healthier option with less butter and eggs.

I am a lover of lemons and lemon cakes. I can hardly say no to classic buttery lemon pound cake made with almonds and drizzled with lemon syrup.

There is also a great version of Lemon Polenta Cake from Nigella Lawson that I used to make it for my daughter.

Being creative I have experimented making a lemon cake with chickpea water or aquafaba. Watch this space I will publish the recipe soon. If you want to learn how to do it maybe, we can do it together on the retreat?

Soon, a blog on lemon cake will be out.

Closing Daily Meal

Around 19:30, we will close our day, usually with a thick soup or another light meal like Pumpkin soup with spices & Seedy vegan crackers as preparation for our digestive systems evening work.

What do you usually have for dinner? We all tend to eat less before sleeping not to overload our digestion in the night. Soup is a perfect dinner option.

Do you fancy some great home baked bread or focaccia with local cheese, olives, spreads and pickles? Perhaps with a glass of local red or white wine.

If you are a vegan, would you fancy rice wraps with veggies and chilly sweet spicy chutney or a Baba Ghanoush side dip?

Wait, we will do our best to make sure your wishes come true on the retreat.

The practices of yoga and meditation can help us know our higher self a bit better. Taking time to retreat helps us profoundly understand ourselves so we can have the life we dream of.

Our dreams can manifest from imagination into reality.
I invite you to bravely stand up to the parts of you that hold you back and go to that Retreat.

Your soul will thank you.
